Match Race?
A Curlin/Big Brown match race--a good idea? In my opinion, absolutely not. True, the fans would eat it up, and it would do wonders for the sport IF both horses make it through unharmed. But I think the whole idea is silly for a couple reasons. First of all, I strongly believe that Curlin is the better horse by far, and even if the younger horse (Big Brown) is better, typically 4 year olds are stronger than three year olds. But most importantly, the outcome of the Ruffian/Foolish Pleasure match should be calling a screaming warning in an era of horse racing tragedies. I thought they were trying to increase safety, but instead we're taking two of the best horses in the country and pitting them against each other in an all out, whoever runs faster for longer wins duel. I don't think it was ever good for the horses, but especially not now, when the breed is more fragile than ever. That amount of stress could be catastrophic for both horses.
Answers to Some of Those Questions...
Big Brown did win his Haskel Stakes, but he didn't look at all like the Big Brown we are used to seeing. However, confidence has been re-established in the Dutrow camp, and Big Brown's plans are back on track.
Also, I mentioned War Pass and English Channel--the BCT winner of 2007 has been retired, and as for War Pass, it looks as though his career may be done as well, and certainly, his chance at the Breeder's Cup is a long shot.
As for Curlin? I guess the jury is still out, but it's looking more and more like a switch back to dirt is in the making.
