I'm Upset Rachel Got HOY, Anyone Else?

I've been harboring this one for a while. Rachel Alexandra is a great horse, I'm not going to dispute that. But when put up against Zenyatta? She should not have gotten her Horse of the Year title. I'm not telling you Zenyatta's better, or that Zenyatta would have beaten her if they'd raced each other. But how the panel could overlook Zenyatta's perfect record and Breeder's Cup Classic win, among now nine other G1 victories--I was shocked. And for Rachel Alexandra who beat a suspicious field in the Preakness, and a better one later in the year? So what if Rachel raced the boys twice? Her record wasn't perfect then, and certainly isn't now. In fact, she has yet to win a race since "earning" that title. Don't get me wrong, I love Rachel Alexandra. I think she's a great horse. I just also happen to think that Zenyatta is a once in a lifetime horse. It's a shame, and I hope she sticks out the rest of this year and gets the title she deserves.

Derby and Preakness Review.

I attended the Kentucky Derby this year, so that is why I did not post. Of course alot happened between Eskendereya dropping out and the race itself. Top news was Lookin at Lucky drawing the rail, Sydney's Candy the outside. Also, Devil May Care, the filly ran in place of Eskendereya for Pletcher. When all was said and done, I handicapped quite well. I told my group of friends that Lookin at Lucky was the best horse in the field, but that he wouldn't win, then went with Super Saver because of his record at Churchill Downs and on the sloppy dirt track. Combine that with Calvin Borel's record and I picked a winning combination. Of course the big story of that day was Pletcher finally getting his first Derby win. I'm happy for you, Todd. Then when Lookin at Lucky came back to win the Preakness I was feeling pretty smart. For the record, as of right now, I like Ice Box for the Belmont.
