It happens every year--injury pulls Kentucky Derby hopefuls off the trail before the year even begins, and often, some of the best are the ones to go. We saw it last year with both Quality Road and I Want Revenge, but an even bigger upset here is the defection of Eskendereya. This horse was not only the clear cut favorite for Saturday's Run for the Roses, but he was a most impressive winner of the Fountain of Youth Stakes at Gulfstream Park and of the Wood Memorial at Aqueduct. He was probably the best derby shot Pletcher's ever had. That said, hopefully the injury, which is just a minor deal, won't be career threatening.
So with Eskendereya out, the role of favorite will fall onto the reigning two year old champ, Lookin at Lucky, who does indeed have a great shot, but not quite as solid looking as the Pletcher colt has been.
