2 Hours, 55 Minutes...

(Colonel John hangs on to Sham over El Gato Malo)

Until the rivalry that developed in the Sham Stakes between Colonel John and El Gato Malo will either be settled or elevated in the Santa Anita Derby. Yankee Bravo also sparks interest after a good effort finishing third in the Louisiana Derby, 3 1/2 lengths behind the big player, Pyro. On the Virg has something major to prove today, making his stakes debut after two impressive maiden special weight and allowance/optional claiming wins. Could he be a contender?

With Georgie Boy out, the Santa Anita loses a little bit of it's intrigue, and for all the people who wanted to see the three way showdown between Colonel John, El Gato Malo and Georgie Boy, well, it isn't going to happen. At least not today. For the Santa Anita, I like:

1. El Gato Malo (still think he's the better horse because Colonel John had the better trip)
2. Colonel John (can win over El Gato Malo's backers with a big win)
3. Yankee Bravo (got spooked on homestretch in Louisiana D, could be the one today)
4. On the Virg (I'm a little ambitious with this one, but it's very possible)
5. Bob Black Jack (is very fast, but I have distance questions to ask him)
