(Recapturetheglory wins the Illinois Derby in convincing fashion at Hawthorne)
0
Undefeated Denis of Cork did not run his race today in the Illinois Derby, and an impressive Atoned broke his streak of seconditis, but no the way he wanted to. He was fourth. Atoned looked like he had some late run, but by the time he really got rolling it was much too late. Recapturetheglory had only won once in five starts--a nose victory at Hawthorne Park. He had never won at the allowance level, and this was his first try at stakes competition. He came out of the first gate slot and immediately took the lead, and stayed there. The $300,000 winner's share earned this horse a guaranteed spot in the Kentucky Derby, as he was added to the list of late nominees last week. Here, I overlooked Recapturetheglory. I liked:
1. Denis of Cork
2. Atoned
3. Z Humor
They finished:
1. Recapturetheglory
2. Golden Spikes
3. Z Humor
4. Atoned
5. Denis of Cork
Denis of Cork and Atoned may be question marks for the Run for the Roses after today, depending on graded earnings, and continued health and soundness. I'll be interested to see what connections have to say about Denis of Cork's race today.
